President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities professor Emmanuel Osodeke has come under attack following his interview interview with Arise TV for declaring state owned universities "quacks", he also referred to these state owned universities as "irrelevant". The union's president made this assertion when asked by then interviewer if he was aware that a number of state universities had pulled out of the prolonged strike action.

Professor Emmanuel Osodeke replied the interviewer by giving a list of federal universities that are a part of the strike action while stating that state universities like Osun State University, Kwara State University and Lagos State University were quacks and irrelevant to the strike action. Aggrieved Nigerians have lashed at the union's president. Many referred to the statement as unguarded and derogatory, an apparent lack of tact on the part of the union's president. A number of the insulted universities have given press releases reemphasizing their accreditation statutes as recognised academic institutions.
