Colombian Singer Shakira has been accused by the Spanish authorities of commiting crimes related to tax evasion. This problem with the law comes alongside the singer's ongoing complicated divorce proceedings from Spanish footballer husband, Gerard Pique. Shakira's complicated trial in Spain for tax evasion might mean an eight year prison sentence if found guilty. The singer has been allegedly accused of defrauding the Spanish tax authorities of 14.5 million Euros.

Although the singer has always insisted on her innocence, the tax office claims that Shakira evaded her taxes and, in addition to the prison sentence, adds a request for a fine of 24 million Euros. The prosecutors maintain that Shakira lived "habitually in Spain" and that she stayed in the country for most of the year, so she should have filed personal income tax and wealth tax returns. Prosecutors also accused Shakira of setting up false companies for the sole purpose of concealing income and taxes from the Spanish authorities.
