Lifestyle Sunday: 5 Mysterious Diseases You Never Knew Existed

Oftentimes, we are more aware of regular illnesses like typhoid, fever or malaria.  However, there are very many diseases and genetic conditions you might have never heard of. For some, one might never hear of them in one's lifetime while for others, we see people suffering these diseases but never even realise they are medical conditions.

We've put together a list of 5 mysterious diseases and illnesses you probably didn't know existed. Have you ever heard of any these diseases? Or seen anyone suffering any? Let us know in the comments section.

1 Human Werewolf Syndrome:

This condition is also known as hypertrichosis. It manifests as excessive hair growth on anywhere on a person's body. It can affect both women and men, but it's extremely rare. The abnormal hair growth may cover the face and body or occur in small patches.

2 Alice in Wonderland Syndrome:

Also called Todd's Syndrome, this disease is usually associated with migraines that distort perception of size and distance. It involves seeing objects or people as very big, very small or farther away than they truly are. Patients can also experience hallucinations. The syndrome typically affects young children.

3 Alkaptonuria (Black Urine Disease)

Alkaptonuria is a rare inherited genetic disease which is caused by a mutation in the gene for an enzyme. The body accumulates an intermediate substance called homogentisic acid in the blood and tissues. Homogentisic acid and its oxidized form alkapton are excreted in the urine, giving it an unusually dark colour. The accumulation causes damage to cartilage and heart valves. Symptoms usually develop in people over 30 years of age, although the dark discoloration of the urine is present from birth.

4 Fish Odour Syndrome

Trimethylaminuria (TMAU) also called "Fish Odour Syndrome," is an uncommon condition that causes an unpleasant, fishy smell in a person. Sometimes it's caused by faulty genes that a person inherits from their parents, but this isn't always the case. There's currently no cure, but there are certain kinds of diet that can help reduce the symptoms.

5 Pica:

People with pica compulsively eat items that have no nutritional value. These items could be as harmless as ice and be as toxic as dried paint, chalk, and pieces of metal. This disorder occurs most often in children, pregnant women, and people with intellectual disabilities. It is said that the unusual cravings may be a sign that the body is trying to replenish low nutrient levels.
