Filmmaker Biyi Bandele, Dies at 54

 The entire film industry and patrons of great art have been thrown in deep mourning at the sudden death of filmmaker, playwright and director Biyi Bandele at the age of 54. His demise was announced by daughter, Temi Bandele, via his Facebook page on 9 August 2022. She also wrote that his Facebook account was now being run by family and close friends. Cause of death remains undisclosed to the public, at this time.


Biyi Bandele's directorial debut film Half of a Yellow Sun was screened in the Special Presentation section at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival and received  "rapturous reception".The film received a wide range of critical attention. His new film, entitled Fifty, was included in the 2015 London Film Festival. He also directed the third season of the popular MTV drama series, Shuga. In 2022 he directed the first Netflix Nigerian Original series, Blood Sisters. At the time of his passing, he was director of the new Netflix and EbonyLife Tv co-production Elesin Oba, The King's Horseman, the screen adaptation of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka's stage play Death and the King's Horseman.

Biyi Bandele was also known for his great photography skills especially his deep love for street photography. In his lifetime, he captured many insightful images of street art and the everyday Nigerian. May his Soul Rest in Peace.
