School Proprietor and Hanifa's killer Sentenced to Death

 On Thursday 28 July 2022, a Kano state High Court sentenced Abdulmalik Tanko to death by hanging. Abdulmalik Tanko was the proprietor of Noble Kids Academy who kidnapped and later murdered his 5 year old pupil, Hanifa Abubakar in December 2021. He demanded a ransom of six million naira at the initial stage of the abduction.

Mr Tanko, alongside his accomplice Hashim Isyaku were arraigned before the Kano State High court on a five-count charge of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, confinement, and culpable homicide contrary to sections 97, 274, 277, 221 of the penal code. Mr Tanko had confessed to kidnapping and killing the victim with N100 rat poison before burying her in a shallow grave in one of his schools but later recanted his confessional statement. The judge however permitted the recanted statement be tendered as exhibit during the proceedings. Another accomplice, Fatima Jibril, was given a 2 year sentence for conspiracy and attempted felony by presiding judge Sulaiman Na Abba.
