Bakers to start strike today

Due to the rise in the cost of producing bread and other related products, The Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria (AMBCM) are to start operations shut down today July 20, 2022 which will be a nationwide strike. The strike was originally meant to start July 13th, 2022 but was extended to today so it would permit a seamless Salah celebration.

The Edo State chairman of AMBCM Benjamin Agbonze in an interview with BusinessDay in Benin city stated that the strike is due to increase in the cost of production which has pushed many out of business.

Agbonze said that a year ago, a 50kg bag of flour was sold for N15,000 but is currently being sold for N29,000 while a 50kg bag of sugar is currently sold for N30,000 compared to N18,000 which it was being sold a year ago too. The sad reality has had adverse effect on the bakers. The solution the association seeks is the intervention of the  Federal Government by allowing Bakers benefit from the cassava intervention fund initiated by the former President Goodluck Johnathan. This was meant to empower bakers but they are yet to reap fully the benefits.
