President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why he granted pardon to former governors: Joshua Dariye (Plateau state) and Jolly Nyame (Taraba state) convicted and sentenced for corruption.
Presidential aide, Garba Shehu explained that the recent recommendation by Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy (PACPM) to president Muhammadu Buhari which enlisted two former governors among others as convicts worthy of presidential pardon, was the basis upon which the president acted.
He noted that president was acting in line with Section 175 (1) of the 1999 constitution which empowers him to grant pardon to any prisoner he finds worthy.
The president was heavily criticized for granting pardon to the two former governors against his anti-corruption crusade. In reaction to this, Garba Shehu stated that the president acted in line with the recommendation of PACPM and wouldn't have ignored PACPM recommendation because two governors were enlisted for pardon
