The paramount ruler of Oyo Kingdom, the 45th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, on Friday kissed the dust at the age of 83 and had since been buried according to Islamic rites.

Noteworthy is the fact that the late king had 18 wives before his death, with netizens probing what would be the fate of the wives since it is believed that in the Yoruba tradition, either separated or still married carried lay with other men until certain atonements are made.

A Palace Chief while speaking to Peoples Gazette said the wives may now be available to suitors without undergoing cleansing rituals after the demise of the renowned monarch.

A widely held belief says any man who lays with the wife of a monarch faces death, but palace sources say with his death, his queens, Abibat (first wife), Rahmat Adedayo, Mujidat, Rukayat, Folashade, Badirat Ajoke, Memunat Omowunmi, Omobolanle, Moji, Anuoluwapo, Damilola, Chioma and others are now available for suitors.

“They are not performing any cleansing; They are free to move on with their lives,” he said. Nonetheless, he said. “The wives cannot get married to an indigene of Oyo.”

He added, “Now that Alaafin is dead, they all would be asked to exit the palace with their belongings. Although the properties of the late monarch would be shared among them.”
