I Am A Yoruba Woman -- Grammy Winner, Angelique Kidjo Says In Shocking Interview, Reveals More Details About Her Roots

 Legendary musician, Angelique Kidjo has in a shocking revelation said she is from Nigeria.


Known to be a Benin Republic singer, Kidjo had in the past sang in Yoruba, one of them her hit track: Agolo 'Olajumoke', but not many knew she actually has Nigerian roots.


In a radio interview on Smooth FM, Lagos, the Four time Grammy winner said according to what her mother told her, she is originally from Iseyin, a town in Oyo State, Nigeria.

Though she was born in Ouidah, Benin Republic, 61-year-old Kidjo added that she has a lot of relatives in Nigeria even though she doesn’t visit them often.


“My Mum told me that I am from Iseyin, because when my grandfather’s great great great great father came back from Brazil, they found their roots in Iseyin.”


“From my mother’s mother’s side, we have always been from Nigeria, so we have families in Abeokuta. Ibadan, Lagos, everywhere, I have cousins I haven’t seen a million years that I miss a lot.”
