The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has reportedly entered into a pact with the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan to keep eyes on some Turkish owned businesses in Nigeria.
Recall that President Erdogan survived a military coup five years ago which some Nigeria students in Turkey were fingered.
Erdogan friend turned foe, Fethullah Gulen, a businessman and the founder of Gulen movement which boasts of about 6million members globally, was alleged to be behind the attempted assassination of Erdogan five years ago. Gulen who is currently in exile in the United States of America has investments in some African states.
Despite Erdogan several efforts to extradite Gulen from the U.S, his efforts ended in frustration. Hence, the president of Turkey decided to seek an alternative which is working with African leaders to keep surveillance on Gulen through his investments.
The Erdogan administration had after the failed coup made a proposal to the Nigerian Government to shut some businesses linked to Gulen in Nigeria. However, the Nigerian Government was at then grappling with recession and economic downturn; hence, saw Erdogan’s demand as unprofitable.
However, the recent rising insecurity in Nigeria has forced the Buhari’s administration to reconsider the proposal in exchange for military wares to prosecute its war against banditry and terrorism in Nigeria.
President Erdogan’s visit to Nigeria on the 20th of October is linked to his political interest to leverage the President Buhari’s demand of military wares from Turkey as a barter for achieving his political interest against his political enemies, particularly, Fethullah Gulen.
After their meeting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, president Buhari said in a joint press briefing that they had “useful discussions on a number of bilateral issues, aimed at strengthening this cordial relationship between Nigeria and Turkey. As a positive outcome, eight major agreements/MoUs on a number of the key sectors including energy, defense industry, mining, and hydrocarbons, among others were signed today”.
Note also that president Buhari just returned from Turkey on the 19th of December where he participated in the Turkey-African Summit.
