Cristiano Ronaldo returned to the
Theatre of Dreams after twelve years away to lead the frontline once more for
the Red Devils.
Premier League action returned
this Saturday following the just concluded international break where the Portuguese
super star broke the record for the most goals scored for by an international
with a brace against the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester United went into their
fourth Premier League action of the season in high spirits, led by Ronaldo as
they welcomed Newcastle United to the Old Trafford Stadium on Saturday
afternoon.
The Red Devils came into this
fixture looking to secure their third win of the season with a victory over a
struggling Newcastle United side who once again are not able to maintain
consistency.
Ronaldo was the tormentor in
chief with a whopping six shots on goal as Manchester United were all dominant
in the opening minutes of the match as they created a couple goal scoring opportunities
to find the back of the net.
As the game wore on though, Newcastle
United began to create their own scoring opportunities. At some point, it
looked like they would put a goal past Manchester United in the match.
Manchester United's dominance
however paid off as the first half drew to a close when in the 45th minute of
the match Cristiano Ronaldo took advantage of an error from the Newcastle's
goalkeeper Tim Krul to tap home effortlessly from close range.
The first half eventually
concluded in a narrow 1-0 lead for the Red Devils. Cristiano Ronaldo's tap-in
sent the Theatre of Dreams into raptures as fans had thronged the stadium to
welcome back their hero.
In the second half, Newcastle
United showed they were not in any mood for fanfare as they got the equaliser
in the 56th minute of the game. Alain Saint Maximin set up Javier Manquillo in
the box who sent in a powerful strike beyond David de Gea into the back of the
Manchester United's net to make the score line 1-1.
Cristiano Ronaldo came to the
rescue for Manchester United in the game as he scored his second goal of the
match to put his side 2-1 ahead in the 62nd minute. After a confident build up
from the back line, Luke Shaw surged forward with the ball to set up Cristiano
Ronaldo who raced into space and slot in between the legs of Newcastle
goalkeeper Tim Krul.
Bruno Fernandes launched a ballistic
missile in the 80th minute of the match to give Manchester United a comfortable
3-1 lead over the Magpies.
Loan returnee, Jesse Lingard
wrapped things up for Manchester United on the 90th minute of the match as he
found space in the box off a Paul Pogba through ball to find the back of the
net to make the full-time score line 4-1 in favour of the Red Devils.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace means
he is now in the run in for the end of season’s top scorer award if he is able
to maintain his form, and United are able to keep injury free.
