Kabul airport attacks; could Trump have avoided the disaster?

What’s the situation?

Terror attacks occurred on Thursday outside the Kabul airport, resulting in the deaths of at least 170 people including 13 US service members. This is the biggest single-day casualty of the US military in Afghanistan since 2011. The attacks show that the US finds it difficult controlling the chaotic situation at the airport.

More so, this makes a mockery of the peace and stability that former president Donald Trump was able to establish in the troubled region during his administration.

The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the terror attacks. This was also confirmed by the US. The Taliban strongly condemned the "gruesome incident" and said it "will take every step to bring the culprits to justice." This explicit statement has received a lot of attention.

Now, that’s what most Americans find worrisome. When the United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001, their mission was to destroy the Osama Bin Laden led Al Qaeda and the Taliban who claimed responsibility for the 9/11 bombings of the World Trade Center.

How can the same Taliban be assuring Americans of justice and protection?

Reacting to the bombings, Donald Trump released a statement saying, “this tragedy should never have been allowed to happen, which makes our grief even deeper and more difficult to understand”

Many more Americans have been reacting, and blaming the Joe Biden administration for the way they have handled The US troop’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The situation is that, the Taliban which they went in to destroy has given them a deadline of August 31st to leave. And surprisingly, the US is trying to meet up.

Could this happen if Donald Trump was president?

Remember his administration led an assault on high profile terrorist leaders like Kasim Soleimani from Iran, and Ahmed Baghdadi.

When the bloody attacks took place on Thursday, it was five days before the US withdrawal deadline set by Biden. The US has predicted more attacks. This will obviously affect the US withdrawal, making it a risky and desperate mission.

Biden is unlikely to stop withdrawing. If he is dragged back to Afghanistan due to the latest terror attacks, he is making a political dead end for himself. Therefore, he has no option but to continue with his withdrawal plan. But the terror attacks by the ISIS will only make the Biden administration's withdrawal more miserable and infamous. The repeated incompetence of the Biden team is clear to all. Except for Democrats who continue to blame the previous administration.

That reminds you of the situation in Nigeria. Doesn’t it?

What next?

Biden has vowed to retaliate. The US army is likely to bomb some targets suspected to be IS bases so as to comfort US opinion. But the US army has given up all spots except the Kabul airport. The intelligence network supported by the Afghan government has collapsed. The precision of the retaliation of the US will be questioned. Its effect is expected to be much lower than previous strikes.

One thing has to be said however, the withdrawal plan of the US troops from Afghanistan was initiated by Donald Trump, who felt an end to the war was due. But it was not supposed to appear like the world’s greatest military is fleeing from the battle front.

Would things have taken a different turn under his watch?
